Brazilian quintet Venomous hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, the melodic death metal band Venomous has recently unveiled their latest offering, “Tribus,” on February 19th, 2021.
This EP follows their previous two full-length albums, “Defiant” in 2018 and “The Black Embrace” in 2019. Like many other releases in 2020 and 2021, “Tribus” was composed entirely in isolation, without the usual collaborative process in a shared studio or rehearsal space.
The longing for unity that characterized this solitary creation process is palpable throughout the songwriting, especially displayed in the closing track and single, “Unity.”
The EP kicks off with “Eerie Land,” featuring a captivating syncopated piano intro that seamlessly blends with heavy riffing and a thunderous rhythm section. Despite the introduction of harsh vocals, there is an uplifting atmosphere tinged with nostalgia. Tigas Pereira’s vocals shine, highlighting his powerful delivery in both harsh and clean styles, effectively carrying the song. Renato Castro’s bass adds interesting runs and surprisingly stands out in the mix. The track displays a progressive song structure and intricate songwriting.
“Trinity” introduces a touch of djent in the guitar work, transitioning into full-fledged melodic death/thrash territory.
The song boasts pulverizing drumming by Lucas Prado and some blistering shredding. Venomous channels the spirit of 90s progressive thrash and melodic death metal, reminiscent of bands like In Flames, Death, and a hint of compatriots Sepultura.
Next up is “Duality,” where elements of alternative rock and post-hardcore make their way into the song. It is the most accessible and straightforward track on the EP, despite its thrashy mayhem in the verses. The contrast between the verses and the uplifting chorus embodies the essence of duality.
Certain sections even evoke the spirit of “Alaska”-era Between the Buried and Me. The synth work adds a touch of mystery and a sci-fi atmosphere, accompanied by tasteful soloing throughout the song.
“Unity” as the Closing Track: Saving the best for last, “Unity” serves as a beautiful closing track with a distinct modern soundThe softer sections evoke the progressive metal stylings of Caligula’s Horse or Leprous. It is a melodic tour de force, striking a balance between captivating melodies and hard-hitting moments.
Although it is less technically complex than the previous track, it remains just as compelling. The EP concludes with a lovely and elegant piano coda by Felipe Abbamonte.
Summary and Progression: In summary, “Tribus” marks a significant step forward for Venomous, presenting a slice of progressive melodic death metal.
The EP is a testament to their skilled musicianship, strong and memorable songwriting, and solid production values. The only downside is that it leaves the listener yearning for more, a testament to its captivating nature and the anticipation it generates.
