Chronicle – GODFROST “Hanging Doll”
Author:Sandra Vidalon September 22, 2026
Industrial metal, gothic darkness, and electronic coldness: GODFROST advances in the shadows with “Hanging Doll .” Some albums aim to immediately deliver a powerful punch. And then there are those that prefer to create an atmosphere, gradually drawing you into their world before tightening the noose. “Hanging Doll ,” the new EP from GODFROST , clearly belongs to the latter category.
In five tracks and just under twenty minutes, the Japanese group constructs a cold, heavy, and frankly unsettling sound. The guitars are massive, the mechanical programming and electronic textures give the whole thing the feeling of a machine hurtling at full speed through a night-shrouded landscape.
From the opening track, “Nefarious ,” the tone is set. The song unfolds with an almost industrial heaviness, driven by effective riffs and a production that gives ample space to the various elements. Luna Midnight ‘s vocals add a dark and theatrical dimension to the whole.
Then comes “Escape from Reality ,” which allows GODFROST to showcase another facet of their identity. Sara ‘s vocals provide an interesting contrast and give the track a different feel. Here, the electronic elements take center stage without ever overshadowing the essentials: the guitars and that heavy, enveloping atmosphere.
But it’s truly the title track, “Hanging Doll ,” that best encapsulates the band’s universe. It’s all about tension. The riffs, the electronic textures, and the vocals all seem to move in the same direction, creating an almost suffocating atmosphere. No need for overkill: GODFROST knows that repetition and atmosphere can be just as effective as a deluge of notes.
With “Bloodcurdling Scream ,” we find a more direct and aggressive approach. The title is particularly apt and allows Luna Midnight to reclaim the spotlight. The guitars gain bite and the overall sound is more brutal.
Finally, “Seasons End” closes the EP with a more melancholic approach. A clever way to end this journey, leaving a final impression rather than desperately seeking a final punch.
What’s most striking about “Hanging Doll” is its coherence. GODFROST doesn’t simply juxtapose metal, industrial, and electronic elements: the various components seem to have been carefully chosen to form a single universe. Lee Popa ‘s production further reinforces this identity, giving the tracks a particularly compact and modern feel.
So, is it a revolution or simply a confirmation? Probably not the point. “Hanging Doll” functions primarily as a plunge into a dark universe where mechanical coldness meets gothic sensibility. GODFROST may not reinvent industrial metal, but the band possesses enough personality to make you want to follow this machine to its conclusion.
A short, dark, and effective EP that prioritizes atmosphere without sacrificing power. Fans of industrial metal and gothic sounds should find something to enjoy.
